Abstract
A process for the production of articles of steels which have high creep-resistance and no appreciable inclination to fracture without deformation is characterized in that the steels are stable austenitic steels containing: C 0.01-0.5 per cent; Cr 15.0 25.0 per cent; Ni 10.0-35.0 per cent; B 0.01-0.3 per cent; Fe with the usual contents of Si, Mn, S and P, the remainder; the steels being hot worked at temperatures below 1180 DEG C, rapidly cooled from temperatures in the range 1100-1170 DEG C and annealed for several hours at annealing temperatures below 800 DEG C, e.g. 700-750 DEG C. The steels may also contain one or more carbide forming elements such as Ti, Nb, Ta, Zr in amount sufficient to combine with all the carbon present, one or more of W, Mo, V and Si in total amount of up to 6.0 per cent, Co up to 30.0 per cent, N up to 0.3 per cent. The Ni content may be wholly or partly replaced by Mn. Specifications 612,001 and 617,194 are referred to.
