Abstract
A weldable, high tensile, corrosion-resistant martensitic steel consists of 0.03-0.10 per cent C; over 16 per cent and up to 18 per cent Cr; 3-6 per cent Ni; 0.30 to 1.20 per cent Nb (including residual Ta) or Ti, the amount in the case of Nb being greater than 8 times the C content and in the case of Ti being greater than 5 times the C content; Si and Mn each 1 per cent maximum; free from Mo, Cu, Al or containing only residual amounts not exceeding 0.2 per cent each; S and P up to 0.4 per cent each; N not exceeding 0.1 per cent; and the remainder Fe apart from usual impurities associated with steel manufacture. A preferred steel has 0.7 per cent Nb, 0.08 per cent C, 17 per cent Cr, 5 per cent Ni. The heat treatment preferred consists of hardening for 2 hours at 950 DEG C., air cooling uniformly to room temperature, followed by tempering or stress relieving at 300-650 DEG C. (preferably heating between 550-600 DEG C. for 2-6 hours) and air cooling. In certain cases the 950 DEG C. treatment may be omitted, the hot worked articles being simply stress annealed at 550-600 DEG C. and cooled in air or in the furnace.
