Abstract

Austenitic Cr-Ni-Co stainless steels have the following composition: Cr 12.0-22.0 per cent; Ni 0.5-10.0 per cent; Co 4.0-40.0 per cent; Mn up to 2.0 per cent; Mo 1.0-4.0 per cent; Cu 2.0-4.0 per cent; Ti 0.15-0.75 per cent; Nb 0.2-1.1 per cent; C up to 0.35 per cent; Fe, and impurities such as S, P, Si, the remainder. The elements S and P preferably do not exceed 0.04 per cent each. The steel is heat-treated to provide at least a part of its Cu, Ti and Nb in solution, preferably at 2050 DEG -2250 DEG F. It is then quenched and heated to achieve precipitation hardening preferably at 1200 DEG -1500 DEG F. The alloys may be used for parts of steam or gas turbines or superchargers which serve under high stress and corrosive conditions at high temperatures.
