Abstract

A high expansion austenitic steel, suitable for use in the manufacture of internal combustion engines, has the following composition:-C 0.35-0.90 per cent, Mn 3.5-6.0 per cent, Cr 3.0-7.0 per cent, Ni 9.0-16.0 per cent, Cu 0.5-12.0 per cent, V 0.2-0.5 per cent, Fe with or without impurities forming the remainder. The V content may be wholly or partly replaced by one or more other carbide-forming elements, namely W, Mo, Ti, Nb and Ta, the total content of the carbide-forming elements not exceeding 1.0 per cent. The steel may also contain 0.2-2.0 per cent of Si. The steel is normalized at a minimum temperature of 700 DEG C. The heat treatment may consist of normalizing at 700-750 DEG C for about four hours followed by a low temperature heat-treatment at 550-600 DEG C for about 24 hours.
