Abstract
An alloy steel for use in apparatus capable of withstanding high temperatures consists of 15-19 per cent Cr, 7-12 per cent Ni, 0.03-0.1 per cent C, 0.01-0.1 per cent B, from 4-12.7 times the carbon content of a carbide former, and optionally 0.2-2 per cent Mn and 0.1-3 per cent Si, the remainder being iron and the usual impurities. The carbide former is Ti and/or Nb and/or Ta and/or Zr and preferably Ti and/or Nb, and is preferably from 5.5-11 times the carbon content of the alloy. The P and S content is kept below 0.05 per cent. The steel can be heat-treated by quenching above 1900 DEG F and tempering between 900 DEG F and 1500 DEG F.
