Abstract

An alloy highly resistant to chemical attack has the following composition: Cr 12.00-25.00 per cent, Ni 2.00-6.00 per cent, Mo 3.00-6.00 per cent, Co 2.00-7.00 per cent, C less than 1.20 per cent, the remainder being iron and impurities such as Si, Mn, S, P, Cu and N. The alloy contains less than 1.00 per cent each of silicon and manganese, preferably about 0.30 per cent of silicon and 0.50 per cent of manganese. The carbon content is generally less than 0.15 per cent. A preferred alloy has the composition: Cr 18.00 per cent, Ni 4.00 per cent, Mo 4.00 per cent, Co 4.00 per cent, the remainder being iron and carbon and impurities. The preferred alloys may be annealed at, for example, 1100 DEG C. for 1 to 2 hours followed by quenching.
