Abstract
Alloy steels which may be used for machine parts or articles subjected to high temperatures have the following composition: C, 0.08-1.0 per cent; Si, 0.1-2.0 per cent; Mn, O.1-2.0 per cent; Ni, 5.0-30.0 per cent; Cr, 5.0-30.0 per cent; W or Mo or both, 0.5-10.0 per cent; Nb with or without Ta, 0.05-15.0 per cent; V, 0.05-5.0 per cent; the total content of Nb, Ta, and V being more than 3 per cent; Co, 3.0-30.0 per cent; Fe, not less than 33 per cent and constituting with unavoidable impurities the balance. The alloy may also contain N, 0.06-0.3 per cent which may be added as high-nitrogen ferrochrome. Al, 0.03-30.0 per cent may be present in which case the alloy may also contain Cu, 0.05-15.0 per cent. Nb and V are preferably introduced in a vacuum furnace or under non-oxidizing conditions. The alloy may be formed into valves of high duty internal-combustion engines or vanes or blades of gas turbines. Specification 647,701 is referred to. The provisional Specification describes also alloys containing V up to 10.0 per cent and alloys from which Co is absent or present in any proportion up to 30.0 per cent.
