Abstract
Alloys having good acid resisting, heat resisting and corrosion resisting properties have the following composition: Cr 14-16 per cent, Ni 7-9 per cent, Cu 1-5 per cent, Mo 1.5-3 per cent, Mn 0.5-2 per cent, Al 0.025-5 per cent, Fe the remainder except for the possible presence of carbon up to 0.25 per cent and silicon up to 2 per cent. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following: Be 0.025-1 per cent, Cd 0.025-5 per cent, Sn 0.5-5 per cent, Pb 1.0-3 per cent, Co 0.025-5 per cent, Ferro-niobium-tantalum (in equal proportions) 0.025-1 per cent. The following narrower range of alloys have particularly good properties : Cr 15-16 per cent, Ni 7.5-8.5 per cent, Co 1.5-2.5 per cent, Mo 2.0-3 per cent, Mn 0.5-1 per cent, Al 0.025 per cent, the remainder being iron which may include up to 0.25 per cent of carbon and/or up to 2 per cent of silicon. In casting the alloys iron nitride may be used as a flux. The alloys may be annealed by heating them to approximately 1100 DEG C. for about 1 1/2 hours and quenching in water.
