Abstract

An alloy exhibiting the characteristics of high resistance to creep and freedom from oxidation scaling at high temperature has the following composition:-Cr 5.0-40.0 per cent, Ta and/or Nb 5.0-25.0 per cent in total, Co the remainder with normal impurities such as nickel, copper and iron, up to 40.0 per cent of the cobalt being replaceable by nickel. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements in the stated proportions:-B up to 1.0 per cent, C up to 1.0 per cent, Si up to 1.0 per cent, V up to 2.0 per cent, Mn up to 5.0 per cent, Al up to 5.0 per cent. The alloy may be made by preparing a master alloy of cobalt and a high proportion of niobium and/or tantalum by an aluminothermic reduction of mixed oxides of these metals, preparing a melt of chromium and cobalt and adding to this melt the required amount of the master alloy. It is preferred to use electrolytic cobalt, substantially free from iron, in making the melt.
