Abstract

An alloy which is useful for hard facing purposes at comparatively low temperatures and has good adherence properties, particularly with stainless steel and pure molybdenum, has a composition within the following range: Si, 2.5-5.5 per cent; B, 0.75-5.25 per cent; Ni, the balance. The alloy may also include one or more of Fe, Mn and Cr in total amount less than 5.0 per cent. The alloy may be made by melting together Ni, nearly pure Si and a Ni-B alloy containing about 17 per cent B, or by adding amorphous B to a melt containing the Ni and Si.
