Abstract
A method of producing austenitic steel components of high yield strength, without cold working, consists in subjecting to solution and precipitation hardening, alloys of the following composition: C 0.35-0.55 per cent. Mn 3.0-less than 5.0 per cent. Ni 10.0-13.0 per cent. Cr 2.5-5.5 per cent. V 0.5-1.0 per cent. Fe and incidental impurities the remainder, the treatment comprising heating at a temperature in the range 1100 DEG C.-1200 DEG C. for a period which for a temperature of 1150 DEG C. is about 1 hour, cooling in air, oil or water, followed by heating to 650 DEG C. -750 DEG C. for a period which, for a temperature of 700 DEG C. is about 16 hours, and finally cooling. Specification 612,106 is referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the treatment of alloys within wider ranges namely: C 0.2-0.7 per cent. Mn 2.0-8.0 per cent. Ni 8.0-15.0 per cent. Cr 2.0-12.0 per cent. V 0.3-1.0 per cent. Fe substantially the remainder.
