911,626. Making ploughshares. RANSOMES, SIMS & JEFFERIES Ltd., and REVETT, R. H. March 17, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1958], No. 2741/58. Class 83 (2). A method of making a one-piece ploughshare from silicon-manganese steel, nickel steel or nickel-chromium steel (carbon content preferably above 0.5%), or chromium steel comprises forming the steel into the requisite shape, as by bending and forging, thinning the cutting edges and submitting the ploughshare to an isothermal heat treatment. The heat treatment may consist of heating the steel to a temperature above the austenitizing temperature of the material, e.g. 915‹ C., for say 15-30 minutes, and quenching in molten nitrate or lead, or in oil at a temperature above the point at which martensitic transformation commences, e.g. 300‹ C. This temperature is maintained for up to 30 minutes during which the unstable austenite changes to bainite.
