Abstract

Cold worked steel sheet and strip containing 0.07-0.14% of carbon and less than 0.02% of phosphorus is heated to a temperature in the range 740-850 DEG C., quenched to a temperature below 250 DEG C., and over-aged in the range 150-250 DEG C. to yield a product having a hardness of at least 65 on the Rockwell 30 T scale. Heating by induction and by salt bath is referred to, as is quenching and over-ageing in a bath of 50/50 lead-bismuth alloy. Over-ageing may also be carried out by coiling the quenched strip and holding the coils in a thermally insulated container. Subsequent temper-rolling of the treated strip, followed by strain-ageing 350 DEG C. for 20 seconds is mentioned.
