Abstract

782,356. Heat treating steel. GENDERS, R., and KEMMISH, W. B. April 21, 1955 [Jan.27, 1954], No. 2500/54. Class 72 [Alsoin Group XII] A method of heat treating carbon or low alloy steel bars comprises heating the bars to above the temperature of austenite formation, spraying with coolant to cool the surface to a temperature above the start of martensite formation, heating the surface cooled bars to a temperature between 300‹C. and 700‹C. cooling and subjecting the bars to a mechanical treatment, and finally subjecting the bars to a low temperature heat treatment. As shown, the bars 11 are heated to above the austenite temperature in a furnace 10, moved through a series of rings 13 which supply a spray of water, by a push rod 16 and then into a furnace 19 held at a temperature of 300-700‹C. The bars are then cooled and subjected to a mechanical treatment e.g. reeling, straightening, or cold drawing, and then given a final treatment at 200-600‹C. The process is stated to give low alloy or carbon steel a tensile strength of 50-65 tons per square inch and an Izod value of 35 ft. lbs.
