Abstract
High strength aluminium coated steel is produced by heating a bath of molten aluminium to a temperature above the Ac3 point of steel, immersing the steel in the bath to form an aluminium coating thereon, withdrawing the steel in the fully austenitic condition, cooling it to room temperature and then working it. The steel may be pre-heated to above its Ac3 point in a protective atmosphere prior to immersing it in the aluminium. In the example, an 0.085% carbon steel wire was heated in a patenting furnace to 1550 DEG F., immersed in a bath of molten aluminium at 1370 DEG F., withdrawn, cooled in air, and finally cold drawn.
