Abstract

Low carbon steel sheet is electroplated with a thin coating of tin at the rate of 0.05-0.15 lb. per box of 218 sq.ft., and then heated at 1000-1250 DEG F. until all the tin is combined to form the alloy FeSn. It is stated that at temperatures below 925 DEG F. the alloy FeSn2 is formed, above 925 DEG F. this becomes FeSn. The heating stage of the coated strip may be effected in an annealing tower containing a non-oxidizing gas e.g. HNX, and passing it through at the rate of 1000 ft. per minute, whereby the steel strip is annealed by bringing it to about 1100 DEG F. in 20 seconds, holding it for 10 seconds, and then cooling to 300 DEG F. in about 60 seconds. A further heavier coating of tin and heating at a lower temperature to flow-brighten the coating may be applied, forming an intermediate coating of FeSn2 and a top coating of tin.
