Abstract

Ferrous sheet stock is coated with aluminium to a thickness, if necessary after working, of .0001-.0003 inches and is then heated to 1050-1750 DEG F. to cause the aluminium to alloy with the iron. Iron or steel stock is first coated with aluminium, e.g. by dipping as described in Specification 453,803, and then cold rolled to reduce the thickness of coating to 0.0001-0.0003 inches. The heating may be a box anneal in a non-oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen, hydrogen or dissociated ammonia, or a strand anneal in an oxidizing atmosphere. The heat treated strip may be brightened by heating in dry hydrogen at 1650-1750 DEG F. The aluminium bath may contain minor amounts of silicon and mageutectic.
