Abstract
Silicon-containing ferrous metal strip is decarburized by coating the strip with a substance through which carbon diffuses more easily than does silicon prior to the decarburizing treatment. The strip may be coated with pure iron electrolytically, the thickness of coating depending on the thickness of the strip. In an example a strip 0.035 inch thick was given an iron layer 0.25 X 10-3 inches thick and decarburized for 16 minutes, resulting in a reduction of carbon from 0.066 per cent to 0.004 per cent. The coated strip was then made homogeneous by a high temperature treatment.
