Abstract

A method of case hardening comprises adding to the case-hardening furnace a mixture consisting of aliphatic alcohols containing one or two carbon atoms, alcohols with three or more carbon atoms, and at least 5% of pyridine The mixture preferably contains 60-100 parts by weight of oxygen per 100 parts by weight of carbon, and, if insufficient oxygen is present in the mixture, up to 5% water may be added. After carburizing and quenching, the workpieces may be heated to 800 DEG C. to 1000 DEG C. and quenched to obtain further hardening.
