Abstract

A process for nitriding steel objects comprises austenizing the objects, cooling them directly to the nitriding temperature, and then nitriding. The cooling may be carried out by an inert or non-oxidizing gas and the austenizing and nitriding may be performed in a glow-discharge furnace. After nitriding the objects may be cooled to produce a martensitic or bainite structure which may then be tempered.
