Abstract
<PICT:1023132/C6-C7/1> A hardenable steel alloy body containing at least 0.15% C is strengthened by austenitizing below its melting point, e.g. at 1475-1500 DEG F., mechanically deforming the body by more than 10% while at a temperature above that of the upper nose of the TTT curve characteristic of the alloy composition e.g. above 1200 DEG F., which nose represents the start of transformation of austenite into other products (ferrite, pearlite or bainite), and completing the deformation without isothermal transformation, then cooling the body to transform to martensite e.g. by rapidly cooling to room temperature and then further cooling to the temperature of a liquefied gas, e.g. liquid nitrogen, oxygen or CO2. Thereafter the alloy may be tempered at 600 DEG F. prior to again cooling to the temperature of liquid nitrogen. Deformation may be effected by forging, rolling, extruding or drawing. Examples of alloy compositions are identical to those specified in the original Specification.
