Abstract

A method of making a rolled steel product comprises hot rolling low carbon steel to form hot rolled strip, continuously cold rolling the strip to reduce its thickness at least 75% to a thickness not greater than 0.025 inch and continuously heat treating the cold rolled strip at a temperature e.g. between 990-1170 DEG F., and for a time not exceeding four minutes such that the steel is not fully recrystallized. In an example, steel having the following compositions 0.03-0.15% carbon, 0.20-0.6% manganese, 0.2% max. phosphorus, 0.4% max. sulphur, 0.01% max. silicon, 0.2% copper and iron the remainder is teemed into a bottle top ingot mould and mechanically capped after a rimming action within 2.5 minutes, preferably within 1.5-2 minutes, and hot rolled in steps to a thickness of 0.074 inch. The strip may be finished at a temperature of 1650 DEG F. and coiled at 1150-1200 DEG F. and may be subsequently pickled in sulphuric acid prior to being cold reduced to a final thickness of 0.0066 inch. It is finally continuously heat treated at 1075 DEG F. for 1.5 minutes in a reducing or neutral atmosphere, e.g. a dry gas comprising 93% nitrogen and 7% hydrogen to obtain a 0-95% recrystallized structure which may contain small ferrite grains in a striated matrix. Alternatively the strip is cold reduced 90-95% to a final thickness of 0.0066 inch, heat treated, temper rolled if necessary, and electro-tin plated. Tinned plated strip may be used for cans and unplated strip for oil drums.
