Abstract
1413136 Heat-treating silicon steel; nitriding NIPPON STEEL CORP 23 Oct 1972 [22 Oct 197 2 Nov 1971] 48660/72 Heading C7D [Also in Division B3] Steel containing (by wt.) not more than 4% Si, not more than 0.085% C, 0.01-0.065% acid-soluble Al, and N present up to 0.012%, together with optionally 0.013-0.027% S is formed into a slab, heated to above 1200‹C and cooled to a temperature in the range 1250- 1000‹C in less than 200 seconds after which it is hot-rolled to plate and cooled to 600‹C or below in less than 200 seconds. The plate is then cold rolled to sheet or strip in one or more stages, the one or final stage involving a reduction of 65- 95%, and the product finally annealed at more than 800‹C. There may be interposed between the hot and cold rolling operations a continous annealing process at 750-1200‹C, in the course of which the nitrogen content of the steel may be enriched by 0.0005-0.004%; after annealing the steel is rapidly cooled, particularly to 400‹C in 2 to 200 seconds to obtain 0.0005 to 0.0095% of precipitated AlN. Alternatively the plate may be nitrided for 30 seconds to 30 minutes at above 600‹C either in nitriding gas or after coating with manganese nitride, and then annealed. The final product is used particularly for transformer cores.
