Abstract
1446892 Heat-treating steel bolts KOBE STEEL Ltd 3 Sept 1973 [27 Oct 1972 18 June 1973] 41374/73 Heading C7A [Also in Division B3] A method of producing a high strength bolt from a carbon steel or a low alloy steel comprises cold working an elongate form of the steel to produce at least 10% reduction in cross-sectional area, rapidly heating the steel to a temperature in the range 450‹C to the A, transformation temperature, warm-forming the steel to a bolt shape, and cooling the bolt at least at normalizing rate. The bolt may then be retreated to a temperature in the range 450‹C to the A, transformation, maintained at the temperature for fuse members and again cooled at air cooling rate or faster. The initial steel, which contains up to 0.5% C, may be hot-rolled to provide a pearlitic structure which is then normalized or annealed before cold working, or it may be hotrolled and hardened and tempered to provide a tempered martensitic structure. The cross-sectional area of the steel is reduced by from 10 to 40% and the rapid heating is made at at least 50‹C/minute. The cold working is carried out by wire-drawing or working using roller discs.
