Abstract
1400872 Making steel wire BRIDON Ltd 9 Nov 1973 [15 Nov 1972] 52805/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A method of making low alloy steel wire from low alloy steel rod comprises heat treating the rod to produce a pearlite structure, cold drawing the rod to initiate work hardening, further drawing the rod through a drawing die to reduce the cross-sectional area by 10-40%, heating the drawn wire leaving the die to 300- 450 C. and quenching the wire. The heat treatment to produce a pearlite structure is carried out on rod leaving a rolling mill and it comprises heating above the AC 3 point, cooling to and holding at a temperature between 550-700 C. and then cooling in air. The rod is then cleaned, and given a drawing coat before the initial drawing pass, which in addition to initiating work hardening raises the tensile strength of the rod. The composition of the low alloy steel may be 0À30.-1À00% C, and alloying elements selected from 0À20-1À50% Mn, 0À10-4À00% Si, 0À10-4À00% Cr, 0À05% max. S, 0À05% max. P, 0À10-2À00% Mo, 0À10- 3À00% C, 0À10-5À00% Ni, 0À10-2À00% Ti, 2À00% max. V, 0À50% max. N, 0À10-3À00% Nb, balance Fe and impurities.
