Abstract
PURPOSE: To give to a steel bar as it is hot rolled excellent mechanical properties and cold workability equal to those of the steel material normalized after hot rolling, by subjecting the steel bar of low alloy steel to a specific heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A low alloy steel of medium or low carbon comprising 0.13W 0.25% C, 0.30W1.80% Mn, <1.50% Cr, <0.30% Mo, <0.025% S, <0.025% P, <0.10% sol. Al, or further contg. <0.10% V and/or <0.05% Nb. The steel material is soaked at a temp. 950W1,200°C, then it is hot rolled at a draft 15, and is finished at a temp. 800W950°C. The structure of the steel as it is hot rolled is composed of pro-eutectoid ferrite and a fine granular ferrite-pearlite structure. Control of the cooling rate after hot rolling at 0.3W3.0°C/sec. prevents the increase in bainite structure. The steel has excellent yield ratio, ductility, toughness equal to, or more than, those of a normalized low alloy, without being subjected to normalizing.
