Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent the development of grain boundary corrosion caused by the precipitation of Cr carbide, by hot-rolling austenitic stainless steel under a specific condition, then by cooling it quickly in a psecific temp. region so as to form solid soln. of Cr carbide.
CONSTITUTION: Austenitic stainless steel, contg. <0.08% C, <5% Si, <10% Mn, 4W22% Ni, 15W26% Cr, in addn., one or more members selected from the group consisting of <4% Mo, <2.5% Cu, <0.25% N, <0.60% Ti, <1.0% Nb, is hot rolled in a temp. range 850W1,150°C at a cumulative reduction ratio not lower than 50% and at a finishing temp. of 850°C. The hot rolled material is then cooled rapidly in a temp. range 850W550°C at a cooling rate not lower than V=C2×1,000, where V is mean cooling rate °C/sec., C is carbon content in per cent. By this heat treatment, Cr carbide is dissolved in the matrix to form a solid solution at ordinary temp., thereby preventing the development of grain boundary corrosion due to the shortage in Cr quantity caused by the precipitation of Cr carbide.
