1454758 Working at specified temperatures KOBE STEEL Ltd 8 Nov 1973 [8 Nov 1972 13 Dec 1972 18 Dec 1972 19 Feb 1973] 51822/73 Heading B3V A hot forging process for carbon or low alloy steel involves initially subjecting the steel to heat treatment or plastic working; cooling it; and finally reheating it followed by hot forging at a temperature between 450‹ C. and the A c1 transformation point. The strength and toughness of the steel are claimed to be improved by this process. The initial treatment may involve forging the steel at a temperature between the A c3 and 50‹ C. below the A C3 , followed by an oil or air quench. Alternatively, the steel may be cold rolled or drawn to give a reduction of greater than 15%, or may be forged at a temperature above the A C3 . It is preferred to heat the steel quickly to its working temperature and hold it for a short time during working. In an example, A151 1045 steel was initially forged at 750‹ C., was water quenched, and then hot forged at 600‹ C. The initial forging can alternatively take place at 820‹ C. (which is above the A c3 of 793‹ C).
