Abstract

1,153,714. Regenerating worn rolls YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. 16 June, 1966 [19 June, 1965], No. 26845/66. Headings B3A and B3V. [Also in Division C7] A worn roll from a rolling mill is regenerated by heating it to a forging temperature, e.g. 900‹ to 1050‹ C., subjecting it to a forging operation and then to a further heat treatment. The surface of the worn roll is chipped lightly and the roll heated in steps up to 800‹ C. at 20‹ C./hr and held at this temperature for twenty-four hours. The roll is then heated to the forging temperature of about 1000‹ C. at 40‹ C./hr. and held at this temperature for eight hours before forging. The roll is subjected to light forging with a reduction ratio of cross-sectional area before forging to cross-sectional area after forging in the range 1À1 to 1À4. Alternatively, the worn roll was chipped and heated to 600‹ C. at 100‹ C./hr., then to 900‹ C. at 100‹ C./hr. after ten hours, and after a further five hours to the forging temperature at 90‹ C./hr. before forging at 900-1050‹ C. After the forging the roll is subjected to further detailed heat treatment and a spheroidizing treatment. The surface of the regenerated roll is then chipped roughly and the roll subjected to a further heat treatment. Thereafter the roll is subjected to a final working operation. Various numerical examples of suitable heat treatment including air and oil cooling to the roll before and after forging are given. The roll is of high carbon steel.
