Abstract

1421498 Altering physical properties; making steel strip INTERLAKE Inc 6 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 26993/73 Headings B3V and B3A [Also in Division C7] Killed, semi-killed or capped steel containing 0À18-0À34% C and 0À3-1% Mn is austenitized, hot rolled, e.g. at 1500-1650‹ F., to a thickness 250 to 400% of that finally required, and quenched to a temperature in the range 550- 750‹ F. with water in laminar flow. It is then cold-rolled to final thickness and stress relieved by heating to 800-1050‹ F. for 5-15 seconds in a protective environment, e.g. molten lead. The process is concerned particularly with the production of steel strapping by slitting and edge-rolling the cold-rolled material prior to stress-relieving, the latter operation serving also to remove rolling lubricant.
