Abstract
1318008 Making plates; working at specified temperatures GENERAL MOTORS CORP 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970] 25842/71 Headings B3A and B3V A process of forming titanium or titanium alloy material comprises cooling the material to the temperature of liquid nitrogen, forming the material at that temperature to produce an initial deformation of at least 10% of the total deformation required and then forming the material to its final shape at a temperature in the range 18‹ to 138‹C, and preferably 127‹ to 138‹C. The material is in sheet form and may comprise Ti 90%; Al 6%; V 4% or Ti 92.5%; Al 5%; Sn 2À5%. The forming operations may be bending, stretching, crimping rolling, pressing or moulding. The material may be immersed in a bath of liquid nitrogen in the first stage of the process.
