Abstract

1,222,629. Making gears; forging; stamping; working at specified temperatures. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 18 Nov., 1969 [13 Dec., 1968], No. 56312/69. Headings B3A, B3H, B3Q and B3V. [Also in Division C7] A superplastic metal blank is moulded in a die which is heated to a temperature exceeding that at which the metal loses its superplasticity. In one embodiment the blank P<SP>1</SP> is forged in an electrically heated die 10 closed by a cover-plate 16. The die is steel and the blank is 78% zinc, 22% aluminium alloy. The cover may be heated and insulated from the die. The blank is made superplastic by homogenization at 600‹ F., water quenching and heating to 500- 520‹ F. The die is heated to 610-630‹ F. The blank may be forged into a gear-wheel. In an alternative embodiment the blank is a disc B 1 which is vacuum formed in a heated die 40. The shaped blank is left in the die to heat it and remove the superplasticity and then ejected and air cooled.
