Abstract
556,267. Making pistons. SPECIALLOID, Ltd., and GRAHAM, E. B. Sept. 29, 1941, No. 12599. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVI] Forging.-A piston 12, Fig. 3, formed of light metal, such as aluminium or magnesium, and having near the head an insert 14 of austenitic iron or steel or other material having a lower heat conductivity than the body, is made by forging or pressing in dies. A body 9, Fig. 1, of the light metal rests upon the ejector 7 of the press and is shaped by a die 5 acting axially, the insert 10 resting upon shoulders in the female die 6. The insert may be cast in position prior to the forging of the piston, and may be of various forms in cross-section as shown in Fig. 5. Specifications 274,520, [Class 122 (i)], and 483,993, [Group XXVI], are referred to.
