[Class 83 (iv)] Dies.-In making a piston from aluminium alloy a tubular steel stem e having a ring of holes g is supported in a lower die a and the interior is filled by a removable plug h. An alloy blank i is placed above the stem in a recess of the die into which the top die h enters, shaping the piston and causing flow around and along the stem and into the holes. If the stem is to extend on both sides, the upper die is also bored to receive it and the alloy blank is perforated to pass over the stem. A solid stem with radial holes may be employed.
