Abstract
553,014. Making cartridge case blanks &c. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. (Lorant, H.). Jan. 31, 1942, No. 1325. (Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging machines; squirring.-A press, for making cartridge-case blanks or other cup-shaped articles from billets having a smaller diameter than the required articles, has the bottom of its die 9, Fig. 2, in, at least, two concentric parts of which the outer 10 has the form of a sleeve, fitting the inner or centre part 11, and is adapted to be raised above this centre part to receive a billet B without substantial clearance. The punch 6 is then moved down to hold the billet central, the sleeve 10 is lowered, by a hydraulic cylinder 15 co-operating with fixed plungers 12, 13, until its holder 17 rests on the frame 2, and finally the punch completes its working stroke, upsetting the blank and finally producing the cup C, Fig. 4. During the return stroke, a pin 7 strips the blank from the punch or, if it is held by the die 9, it is ejected by the sleeve 10. The billet B may be made by casting or extrusion and have any desired cross section. The sleeve is detachable and may comprise a number of segments one set of which are used to centre one size of billet and another set another size. In another modification a number of concentric sleeves are used, one at a time, for the same purpose. The top faces of sleeve 10 and centre part 11 may have any configuration which it is desired to reproduce on the bottom of the cup C.
