Abstract

836,706. Extruding; upsetting. KABELUND METALLWERKE NEUMEYER A.G. April 4, 1956, No. 10366/56. Class 83 (4). A hollow metal body having an external flange 11<SP>1</SP> is made by inserting a cold blank 11, Fig. 1 (not shown), preferably of steel, into the stepped cavity of a die 1, closing the annular space between the blank and the cavity wall by means of an annular punch 7 so as to define a radial cavity 12, and forcing a piercing punch 4 into the blank to cause the material thereof to flow into the radial cavity and so form the external flange. The lower end of the blank is shaped simultaneously by the end of an ejector 3 and during piercing the blank material is extruded rearwardly. The annular punch 7 is carried in a member 8 connected by studs 9 and interposed springs 10 with the press-head 6 carrying the piercing punch 4 which is guided in a bush 5. During piercing the annular punch 7 is moved rearwardly against the springs 10 a distance x until its rear end is engaged by the press-head 6 which moves the punch 7 forwardly to press the flange 11<SP>1</SP> to its final form. After withdrawal of both punches, the hollow body is removed from the die by upward movement of the ejector 3. Alternatively the external flange 11<SP>1</SP> may be provided at the top or at the bottom of the hollow body.
