Abstract

944,531. Extruding. KABEL-UND METALLWERKE NEUMEYER A.G. Feb. 23, 1962 [Feb. 24, 1961], No. 7059/62. Heading B3P. In a method of extruding a hollow metal member having an external annular flange spaced from the ends thereof, a cup-shaped blank having an annular wall which is outwardly thickened over a substantial portion of its length extending from a rim thereof is supported on its rim by an annular shoulder in a die and extruded by a ram so that a portion of the thickened part of said blank is forced through an annular space defined by the die wall and a mandrel which defines the internal shape of the port. A cup-shaped blank 16 formed from a circular blank of steel in two backward extruding operations is placed in the die aperture and the combined punch 9 and annular punch 8 press the blank downward to the position shown in Fig. 1, thus completing the forming of the blank interior. At this stage the base of the blank is firmly clamped between the punch 9 and a mandrel 4 carried by a sliding member 3 which is urged upwardly by springs 5. Continued downward movement of the compound punch and the mandrel 4 extrudes the portion 17 through an annular orifice 711 to form an article as in Fig. 2. Ejectors 11, 12 and 13 are provided respectively in the punch and die. Different articles which may be extruded by the method of the invention are described (Figs. 6, 7, 8, not shown), having various internal shapes as defined by suitable mandrels, and various ratios of tube wall thickness on either side of the flange.
