Abstract
837,333. Making tubular pins; extruding. MAY, O. Sept. 26, 1957 [Oct. 3, 1956], No. 30273/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Tubular metal parts 60, particularly for use as gudgeon or roller-chain pins, are produced by extruding a tubular blank 35 through a die 41 to form a blank 54, stopping the extrusion whilst an unextruded head 53 remains, inserting a second blank 35 on top of the head 53 and then continuing the extrusion whereby the head 53 is completely extruded through the die. Pressure is applied by a punch 46 surrounding a mandrel 47. A drawing die 43 is provided below the extrusion die. The blanks 35 are formed from cylindrical metal plugs 30, Fig. 5 (not shown), which are backwardlyextruded to cup-shape 31, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the closed ends are then punched out, Fig. 8 (not shown). All the operations may be performed independently or are preferably performed on a single multiple stage press wherein the workpieces are transferred between stages by a rotary carrier.
