Abstract

727,334. Making seamless tubes. STAHLUND ROHRENWERK REISHOLZ AKT.- GES. Oct. 29, 1952, No. 27195/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of producing long seamless tubes a hollow blank with a closed end is first produced by a combined piercing, drawing and extrusion press and then drawn out into a tube over a mandrel in a thrust bed. The combined press comprises a mandrel 12, Fig. 3, actuated by a cylinder 22 to first pierce a blank in a receiver 10 without destroying the end of the blank. A ram 11 actuated by a cylinder 14 then extrudes the blank through a die 13a surrounding the mandrel 12 which continues its forward motion to assist in drawing the blank through the die 13a. Rams 18 actuated by cylinders 19 returns the mandrel 12 and ram 11 to release the completed blank 2 which is then placed on a mandrel 31 and pushed through a thrust-bed 3. The thrust-bed may comprise a series of drawing rings 30 or a series of reducing rolls 32 (not shown). Additional driven rolls 34, 36 may be provided at the end of the bed 3 to draw through the finished tube.
