Abstract
629,573. Extruding. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and SALTER, F. S. Aug. 21, 1947, No. 23156. [Class 83 (iv)] An extrusion press which is hydraulicallyoperated and has a billet container adapted to be moved into billet-receiving position in the direction of the pressing stroke, is characterized in that the ram is returned to its initial position after an extrusion operation by the hydraulic actuating means which moves the container. As shown, the press comprises a single-acting main ram 10 in a cylinder 11, and a double-acting auxiliary ram 12 in a cylinder 13. Secured to the auxiliary ram 12 is a mandrelholder 30 which passes through the main cylinder and serves as a guide for the ram 10. A mandrel 29 secured to the end of the holder 30 is surrounded by an annular press stem 28 secured to the ram 10, and the stem 28 is surrounded by a container 25 in a holder 15 coupled by tie-rods 16 to a cross-head 17 detachably secured to the auxiliary ram 12 by a U-shaped coupling 18. Positioned in front of the main ram, to which it is secured by the usual columns, not shown, is a platen 14 containing a die-holder 26 and die 27. In operation, and starting from the position shown in Fig. 1, a tubular billet B and a press piece 31 are positioned between the die and container and the auxiliary ram 12 is operated so that both the container and the mandrel are moved relatively to the main ram and up to the platen 14, so that the billet B is received between the container and mandrel and the conical end of the mandrel projects into the die 27 to form an annular extrusion orifice. By operating the main ram, the blank is now extruded into the form of a tube. The container, mandrel and main ram may be withdrawn together by n, reverse movement of the auxiliary ram, and the discard may be removed from the end of the extruded tube by a saw or other cutting device. By removing the U-shaped coupling 18, the mandrel may be advanced through the container and by adjusting the position of the cross-head 17 on the rods 16 by means of nuts 19, the position of the mandrel relative to the container and hence relative to the die may be altered to vary the thickness of the extruded tube.
