An extrusion press for producing rods or tubes from metal billets extruded by a ram through a die supported by a bolster, has a discard removing device 7 comprising a punch 4 movable into the die orifice 18 to sever the discard 22 from the extruded product 19. At the end of the extrusion stroke the die 18 and is holder 17 are moved rearwardly by a long hydraulic motor (not shown) to a position outside the billet container and in front of the device 7. The latter is supported on telescopic guides 9, 10 for vertical movement by an hydraulic motor 8 from an inoperative upper position to a lower position in alignment with the die axis. The shell and disc are supported during shearing by a piston 11. Thereafter the punch 4 is moved into the die 18 by an hydraulic piston 5 to sever off the discard. This is accompanied by slight elongation of the extruded product 19. The latter may be a tube or a rod.
