Abstract
861,617. Extruding ; stretching. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. May 1, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 15013/59. Class 83 (4). An extruded product 52 issuing from an extrusion die 24 is straightened by gripping it at its leading end by a pair of jaws 30, separating it from the discard 54, gripping it at its near end by a second pair of jaws 30 and stretching it between the jaws. Billets are extruded from a vertical container 22 by a ram 20 whose stroke may be limited by a switch 58. The leading end of the product is then gripped between a pair of lower jaws 30 actuated through toothed racks 32 by a fluid pressure motor 42. Billet container 22 is then moved transversely along platen 16 by a fluid pressure motor 28 to shear off the discard and move it over an ejection orifice 60, Fig. 1 (not shown). Lower jaws 30 are moved downwardly by a fluid pressure motor 46 to draw the severed near end of the product through guide tube 62 and between upper jaws 30 which are then closed by a fluid pressure motor 42, Fig. 3 (not shown). The lower jaws are then moved further downwardly to stretch and straighten the product.
