Abstract
739,052. Annealing copper. LONGMAN, J. (Schloemann Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 14, 1952, No. 3969/52. Class 72. [Also in Group XXII] A device for treating extruded copper or copper alloys in strip or wire form, has three guiding parts, a first guiding part containing a hollow guide of angular cross-section having one angle facing downwards leading from the press to a chamber containing an inert gas, a second guiding part containing a hollow guide leading from the inert gas chamber to a chamber containing water under pressure, and a third guiding part containing a hollow guide through which cooling water flows in the direction of travel of the wire and into the inlet of which the second guiding part projects. As shown, copper wire 12 passes through a guide 1 of square cross-section into a chamber 3 containing an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, and into a second guiding part 5. The discharge end of the second guide 5 is tapered and enters a truncated cone-shaped end of a third guiding part 9 contained in a chamber 6. Water fed into the chamber 6 under pressure flows through the annular space between the parts 5 and 9 and in the same direction as the movement of the wire. Any water passing through the part 5 against the movement of the wire is removed through holes 11 into the chamber 3 and removed therefrom by a valve. The angular shape of the guides 1 prevents twisting of the wire or strip. Specification 691,875, [Group XXII], is referred to.
