Abstract

624,466. Lubricating extrusion dies. WALKER, W. S., and STOKES, C. Dec. 6, 1946, No. 36211. [Class 87 (ii] [Also in Group XXII] In a method of extruding metals, plastics or other extrudable material lubricant is supplied to the material approaching the die or in the die ; the pressure on the lubricant being derived from and being greater than, the pressure of the extrusion material against the die. The die orifice 3 is formed in a body 2 which is floatingly mounted in a housing 8 by means of a peripheral flange 5 and a skirt 7 extending rearwardly from the die opening. Lubricant is packed into the annular channel 10 formed between the skirt and flange and on the application of pressure to the die body 2 at the beginning of the extrusion process, some of the lubricant is forced through a number of small passages 11 into contact with the work around the mouth of the die orifice.
