Abstract

678,407. Extruding. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO. April 25, 1950 [May 20, 1949], No. 10149/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A method of forming a punched article such as a cap-screw 03 comprises confining a portion of the article in a chamber defined by a fixed part or annular lip 15 and a relatively movable wall member or sleeve S and punching said article while cold to extrude metal against said sleeve S, said extruding metal carrying the sleeve with it during the punching operation. A blank O<SP>3</SP> having a cylindrical headed portion is formed as described in Specification 677,936. The blank is placed in a die D<SP>3</SP> which has an annular lip 15 and a knock-out punch K<SP>1</SP>. A reciprocating header slide H has a tool supporting sleeve 20 apertured to receive the sleeve S and its mounting sleeve 22. A punch assembly P and a stripping sleeve 32 are carried within the sleeve S and are retained by a plug member 25. The operation of the punch and stripping sleeve is described in Specification 677,936. Prior to the punching operation the sleeve S is moved forwardly over the headed portion of the blank and over the annular lip 15. As the punching progresses the metal fills up the corners 51 in the chamber and tends to flow in the opposite direction from the motion of the punch P. Since the sleeve S is not positively held against the die the extruding metal will carry the sleeve with it and so retract the sleeve from the die. Specification 677,937 is referred to.
