Abstract

1312703 Extruding; billet piercing MASCHINENFABRIK SACK GmbH 6 May 1970 [29 May 1969] 21902/70 Headings B3H and B3P An extrusion press which can be used to produce either rod or tube includes an hydraulic piercer piston 13 inside the main extrusion ram 4 and a control valve 20 actuated in dependence on the position of the piercer tip 15a relative to the die 8 to supply fluid to the piston to keep it substantially stationary. In one form the valve is actuated by an abutment 30 on a cord 27 attached to the piston at one end and a spring- biased pulley 28 at the other end. Alternatively the valve 20 may be electrically actuated or a variable delivery pump could be used to vary the supply to the piston. In operation the piercer tip 15a oscillates slightly within the die. The press can be used to extrude tubes using a piercer which moves with the ram in which case the abutment 30 is positioned so that the valve 20 is not actuated and hence the piercer is maintained fully extended relative to the ram 4 under the control of a valve 19. When the press is used to extrude rods the piercer is maintained fully retracted by appropriately positioning the valve 19. For extruding tubes using a substantially stationary piercer the valve 19 is closed and the abutment 30 positioned so that its separation from the valve actuator 32 is equal to the distance between the piercer tip 15a and the die 8. Hence as the ram advances the piercer is fully advanced until it enters the die. For extruding tubes using a moving piercer the valve 19 is actuated to fully retract the piercer into the ram. When the ram abuts the workpiece a pressure sensitive switch closes the valve 19 to keep the piercer retracted. The ram upsets the workpiece and is then slightly retracted to allow for the backward extrusion caused by the piercing. After piercing the piereer is maintained in its advanced position during the extrusion.
