Abstract

1,112,322. Extruding; billet piercing. BALDWIN - LIMA -HAMILTON CORPORATION. 25 Jan., 1966, No. 3345/66. Headings B3H and B3P. A tubular product is formed by extruding a billet 78 between a mandrel 50 and die orifice 82 and after extrusion the discard 94, Fig. 5 (not shown), is sheared off by a shearing sleeve 54 surrounding the mandrel. The billets 78 and a dummy block 74 are fed by a loader 76 into alignment with the container bore 36 and pressed therein by the press stem 68 actuated by the main hydraulic ram 16. The latter carries an inner cylinder 26 for the double-acting mandrel-actuating piston 40 which is pressurized through duct 44 to pierce the billet, Fig. 2 (not shown). Forward movement of the mandrel in its cylinder is limited by a snap-ring 39. Shearing sleeve 54 fits within dummy block 74 and is actuated by double-acting plunger 52 working in cylinder space 56. Movement of this plunger in both directions is limited by a stop 62 and a shoulder 60. A method of operation is described for extruding open-ended tubes and hollow products with one or both ends closed.
