Abstract

1,063,568. Extruding; billet piercing. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Nov. 7, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 43955/63. Headings B3H and B3P. A hydraulic tube extrusion press has a billet piercing mandrel 22, Fig. 3, actuated by a cylinder 8 disposed behind the main press cylinder and rigidly connected to the main platen 4 carrying the extrusion ram 11. Platen 4 slides along inclined guides on the press bed and is actuated by pistons 16 working in four parallel cylinders 12 supported on a fixed head 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), connected by the rods 3 to a bolster 2 for the billet container 13. Platen 4 is connected by rods 7 to a crosshead 5 carrying the mandrel operating cylinder 8 whose piston drives a further crosshead 6 connected to the mandrel holder 15. Both crossheads 5, 6 are slidable along inclined guides on the press bed. The stroke of the mandrel is limited by the engagement of ring 20 with the end face 19 of a sleeve 18 secured to the platen 4. The tools are retracted by pistons 17 working within the main pistons 16 and connected by rods 9 to the crosshead 5. After piercing and extrusion of the billet, the discard is separated from the extruded tube by shears 23, Fig. 1 (not shown).
