A metal extrusion press has an axiallymovable billet container e adapted to abut against the extrusion die g mounted in a carrier f which is movable to transfer the die from an operative into an inoperate position, the die being also movable in the direction of the press axis by hydraulic means i, k. The press ram b working in an hydraulic cylinder a carries a pressing stem c which co-operates with a press disc m to extrude the billet B through the die g. A pair of dies g are mounted in cross-heads h carried by spring-biased plungers p from the carrier f which is rotatable about an axis X-X. After extrusion the container e is retracted and the operative crosshead h with its die g are then also retracted by hydraulic pistons k working in hydraulic cylinders i in the press platen d and engaging the plungers b. Alternatively, the container and die may be retracted simultaneously. The discard remaining in the container is then severed by a saw n, Fig. 2d (not shown), and the carrier is rotated to reverse the dies and permit the discard to be removed. In other embodiments, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), each cross-head h has its own hydraulic cylinders disposed in the carrier f. Alternatively the latter may have a transverse sliding movement. The press may be used for the extrusion of tubes.
