Abstract

1,263,907. Extruding; billet piercing. FIELDING PLANT DESIGN Ltd. 20 June, 1969 [5 July, 1968], No. 32267/69. Headings B3H and B3P. An extrusion press comprises two or more main cylinders 2a, 2b which are independently mounted on the press bed 1 and drive a movable crosshead 4 which has a rearward stem 8 guided to ensure alignment of the ram 5 for longitudinal movement. The stem 8 is guided on a surface 10 on the press bed or by guide surfaces 29, 30, Fig. 6, on the sides of the cylinders. The crosshead 4 is also guided on surfaces (6a), (7a), Fig. 4 (not shown), on the press bed. The crosshead is returned by cylinders 11. The press is used for the extrusion of tubes and include a billet piercing assembly moved through the stem 8 and the crosshead 4 by a cylinder 13 on a fixed crosshead 20. The connection between the rams 3a, 3b and the crosshead 4 allows free movement to accommodate unbalance of the rams. In a second embodiment the stem (8<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 5 (not shown), is integral with the crosshead and the movement of the mandrel 25 is limited by bushes (36a), (36b) which are axially adjustable in the stem and engage a collar (37) on the mandrel piston (22). The mandrel is rotated during piercing by a worm and pinion drive (38). In a final embodiment the mandrel holder (41), Fig. 7 (not shown), has a stop nut (43) which can be held against rearward movement by looking members (47) during extrusion.
